Stun Guns

Author: Jason Gluckman

Stun Guns are non-lethal electronic devices that use high voltage electric charges to temporarily disable an attacker. Stun Guns function on one or two 9-volt batteries and have a voltage of 85,000 to 625,000 volts.

Stun guns are held firmly in hand and pressed against the muscular area of the attacker, which may be the thigh, shoulder, or buttocks. The high voltage electric charges interact with the electrical impulses of the body, leading to over-exertion of the muscles. The attacker's blood sugar is rapidly converted into lactic acid and the neurological impulses get interrupted.

Generally, if the user continues the device contact for a quarter of a second, intense pain and contraction of the muscles are the results. If this continues for two or three seconds, the assailant becomes stunned, disoriented, loses balance and muscle control. He immediately falls to the ground and the shock lasts for a period of 10 to 15 minutes.

The user can safely touch the stunned person. As the amperage of electric charges is low, the device does not cause any permanent damage or serious injury to the attacker. But the effectiveness depends on several factors such as gun model, voltage rate, the physical nature of the attacker, and the time interval the gun is in contact.

A standard handheld stun gun, the Taser gun, and the liquid stun gun are the three popular types of stun guns. Cell phone models are the latest development in stun gun industry, though they are not as widespread as the earlier, more traditional models.

Stun guns can defend against multiple assailants. Security agencies and police departments commonly use them. Stun guns are ideal safety devices for people who require protection.

The use of stun guns is restricted in some states and cities, so it is advisable to check whether it is legal before carrying or using such devices.
