Treadmill Walking For Exercise

Author: Tim Gorman

On any given day you'll meet someone who isn't satisfied with his or her current weight or physical fitness. Exercise is a hot topic for discussion in our busy lives. With so many people wanting to lose weight there has been a mass proliferation of diets and folks counting calories in an attempt to shred the pounds through a decrease in food intake. Typically these fad diets only work for a short amount of time and then result in a bigger weight gain and unhealthy lifestyle once the participant decides to forgo the diet. For folks wanting to really lose weight and stay fit at the same time the key ingredient is plain old exercise. That's a simple fact and truthfully just walking on a treadmill for 20-30 minutes each morning or evening will do wonders for your health, weight and self-esteem.

Many people confuse elaborate workout programs and a self imposed marathon session of running as the holy grail to serious weight loss but the truth is a treadmill and walking for exercise is all that's really needed to achieve the desired level of fitness you aspire to have. Walking in and of itself is a very simple exercise that is easy to do on a regular basis each and everyday. Folks that embrace and regularly partake in treadmill walking for their exercise program will be in better shape then the physical fitness freak that jumps from the latest fad diet or weight dropping workout routine.

Even if you don't own a treadmill you can still include walking in your everyday lifestyle. The next time you go to a store try parking in a space that's further away then where you normally park. The extra few steps each day can really start to add up in your quest towards a healthier lifestyle. Even if you don't own a treadmill perhaps the company you work for has an onsite gym that features a treadmill that you can use on an everyday or every other day basis for exercise.

Personally I prefer to do my power walking or power striding on a treadmill as opposed to doing it outside or in the local shopping mall. The convenience of using a treadmill far outweighs any benefits from other forms and areas of walking. The routine I normally follow in my treadmill walking for exercise last for about 30 minutes. I usually spend the first 3 minutes warming up with a slow walk (this is normally preceded by 10-15 minutes of quality stretching). I then increase my walking speed on the treadmill to a faster but still comfortable level for about 5 minutes. The next 15 minutes are then spent walking at an accelerated rate. Since I'm using a treadmill I also have the option of adding some resistance to my walking routine by throwing in some simulated hills or an incline. This can easily be accomplished by raising the treadmill bed with the incline buttons on the treadmill. The final 8 minutes of my treadmill walk include 5 minutes of a comfortable but brisk walk followed with a 3 minute cool down phase. I usually end my treadmill routine with about 15 minutes of quality stretching.

Although this walking routine on the treadmill doesn't have all the glitz and glamour of the latest workout method made popular by the numerous workout magazines is can still be an effective weight loss provider. The truth is walking is without a doubt one of the best forms of low impact exercise. When combining it with a treadmill you can actually start to see the calories being burned as you increase your metabolism.

Walking is a great form of exercise. Walking on a treadmill for exercise is an even stronger method to safely lose weight and improve your overall health and physical fitness condition. Treadmill walking for exercise is easy to accomplish and provides benefits that far out produce any fad diet or gimmicky workout routine.
