Vitamin C

Author: Gloria Ruffell

Vitamin C is crucial to optimal immune-system function and reduces the symptoms of colds, asthma and allergies. Vitamin C also plays a central role in the healing of wounds and broken bones and in recovery from surgery, mostly because Vitamin C is vital to the formation of collagen.

Vitamin C also increases athletic ability due to the flexibility of elasticity collagen provides. Collagen also increases the time line of noticeable aging. Millions would appreciate a Facial and Body Cream with high levels of Vitamin C to increase or at least slow down the loss of our own collagen levels. As an anti-aging cream, rose hips is highly recommended.

Introduced collagen into the body that is not part of our own DNA may have an adverse affect down the road. The use of it may cause you to NEED to continue using it, which in turn will eventually cause lumpiness and maybe even elective surgery as it "dries out".

Adequate Vitamin C intake will contribute to healthy collagen formation in the skin thus, protecting the blood vessels from trauma and bruising. Trauma and bruising of the blood vessels damages (sometimes irreparably) certain areas of the body. Even a Certified Message Therapist can cause an Elderly person to have a heart attack just by a facial massage.

Cells in the arterial walls need collagen to help them expand and contract with the beats of the heart. Collagen is also needed in the capillaries, which are more fragile.

A lack of Vitamin C may cause heart attacks and strokes initiated by blood clots as it causes muscle degeneration, which can include the heart.

The level of ascorbic acid in the blood reaches a maximum in 2-3 hours after ingestion then decreases as it is eliminated from the body either by perspiration or urination. Most is out of the body within 3-4 hours, which is why it should be supplied often throughout the day.

Recommended dosage is 60-95 mg a day. This is for daily maintenance of already stable levels of good health. Daily dosage of 250 mg is recommended for supplement. Daily dosage of 500 mg is recommended if there is an aliment of some kind involved. The need for Vitamin C increases with Age and Sickness because of the greater need to regenerate collagen therefore proper supplements will help reduce the depletion caused by age and sickness.

The body cannot utilize more than 500 mg in a 12-hour period therefore, the blood level of Vitamin C will return to its average level in 12-13 hours regardless of the amount consumed.

As a supplement, a regimen of 250 mg per day (within a 12-hour period) or 125 mg every 4 hours, As an aid to depletion, a regimen of 500 mg per day (within a 12-hour period) or 250 mg every 4 hours. As Vitamin C promotes the absorption of Calcium, and Calcium levels decrease when sick or elderly, a supplement of Calcium should be taken.

If you feel you are a healthy person and take Vitamin C supplements only when ill, then this is the recommended daily supplement that should be taken.
35-50 mg to age 14
60 mg over age 14
80 mg during pregnancy
100 mg during lactation

Consuming more Vitamin C than the body can utilize in one intake will result in an increased risk of kidney stones developing due to the conversion of excess Vitamin C to oxalic acid. This could cause interference with the normal metabolism of Vitamin B-12 and symptoms of anemia, skin rash, diarrhea and low blood sugar.
